At the department, education is conducted in the subjects of computer engineering, electronics, electrical engineering and sound production. The research at the department takes place at the research center Sensible Things that Communicate (www.miun.se/stc) and deals with sensor-based systems and services for use within the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.
This PhD position focuses on the development of explainable and robust AI methods applied to
Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN), targeting next-generation wireless systems — 6G. The
research is conducted within the Communication Systems and Networks group at Mid Sweden
University, a leading Scandinavian research group in wireless connectivity. The group includes
around 30 researchers of diverse nationalities, actively participates in international projects, and
maintains strong collaboration with industry.
The project aims to develop AI-supported solutions for programmable O-RAN systems, with tasks
including decision explanation, detection of inconsistencies, and optimization of real-time control
and resource allocation. The research will involve use cases relevant to 6G technologies, such as
Massive MIMO, network slicing, and cross-layer coordination.
As part of this position, you will work closely with leading academic and industry experts,
contributing to cutting-edge innovations in next-generation wireless communication systems.
