Department of Engineering, Mathematics and Science Education

We conduct research and education in physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, industrial design engineering and didactics in mathematics and science education. We offer unique and world-leading research within the FSCN Research Centre and Sports Tech Research Centre.

Research Environment

As a PhD student in engineering physics, you will conduct research at the FSCN Research Centre at Mid Sweden University (MIUN) for 75% of the time (second to fourth year) and also work with the Sustainable Technologies research group at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) for 25% of the time (first year). This provides a unique opportunity to work in two dynamic research environments and be part of an international academic setting. The studies will result in a so-called double degree with diplomas awarded from both MIUN and UEF.

At FSCN, research focuses on materials and process technology, where multidisciplinary work aims to develop resource-efficient processes and improve the functionality of bio-based materials and energy materials. At Sustainable Technologies at UEF, the focus is on developing sustainable and circular processes within wood and fiber technology, as well as creating new materials to replace non-renewable alternatives.

International Research School
The doctoral position is part of the international research school IRS TransTech, where you will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading international universities and Swedish companies. The research school focuses on transformative technologies such as AI, IoT, and advanced materials, with the goal of driving sustainable industrial development and strengthening international research and business networks.

Job description
Graduate studies including (80–100 %) research and teaching as well as (0–20 %) administrative work.

Fiber analysis is a method for examining particle properties through automated microscopy. This technique is commonly used in pulp production to characterize wood fibers, providing insights that help understand, control, and optimize industrial processes.

In this PhD project, titled "Unlocking Pulp Strength Capacity through Fiber Analysis Targeting Internal and External Fibrillation", you will apply machine learning and AI to predict new critical fiber properties, particularly related to their surface structure and internal composition. A key part of the project involves developing and refining analysis methods that use microscopy images to estimate parameters such as fiber wall thickness and swelling, which in turn influence pulp strength and dewatering properties.

The PhD project is primarily conducted at MIUN but includes a one-year exchange at the UEF. During this period, you will have the opportunity to work in an international research environment, deepen your expertise in advanced image analysis, and benefit from UEF’s expertise in fiber characterization and sustainable material processes.

Requirements and assessment
General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements include at least 90 credits in the subject of Engineering Physics/Physics/Mechanical Engineering or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Laboratory work or other practical experience in technology is meritorious. So is demonstrated skill in mathematical modeling or simulation, and communication skills, as demonstrated by, e.g., teaching experience or publication in peer-reviewed publications.

We are looking for an individual who is driven, creative, collaborative, and otherwise suitable for pursuing a doctorate. A short description of the applicant’s visions and goals for the doctoral studies should be included. The applicant must have a strong command of the English language.
