We conduct research and education in physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, industrial design engineering and didactics in mathematics and science education. We offer unique and world-leading research within the FSCN Research Centre and Sports Tech Research Centre.

The Sports Tech Research Centre is an interdisciplinary research centre that conducts research in innovative development and validation of products, materials, technology and methods, primarily with sports organisations, sports and outdoor equipment companies, as well as hospitals and industry. The research also covers medical applications, equipment for people with a disability and additive manufacturing (3D-printing) with applications primarily for materials and process development. The research centre has several technologically advanced labs, some of which are unique in the world.

Job description

The PhD project aims to investigate the influence of external forces on skiers’ performance in cross-country skiing and roller skiing. Skiers’ performance is influenced by several external factors, such as the profile and length of the course, the characteristics of skis and the snow, the weather and wind, as well as factors related to the skier themselves such as physique, ability to use different types of energy systems, skiing technique, and their energy efficiency.

The work concerns the interactions between humans, their equipment and the environment, and will include mechanical and biological experimental studies as well as the development of simulation models for cross-country skiing and associated experimental verification.

Experiments will be carried out both in the field, on roller-skis and snow, as well as in our wind tunnel laboratory with built-in treadmill. Important tools in the studies are measuring equipment for rolling resistance and snow-ski friction, energy expenditure, wind speed and high resolution positioning systems. In addition, numerical programming is used for simulation and modelling.

Independent third-cycle studies encompassing research (80-100%), teaching and administrative tasks (0-20%).

 

Entry requirements

General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements include at least 90 credits in the subject of mechanical engineering, sports technology, engineering physics, technical design/product development, medical technology or mechatronics or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Assessment criteria

We are looking for applicants who have studied mechanics (preferably biomechanics), mathematics and measurement technology, preferably with elements of sport or medicine/physiology. The applicant should also have a good theoretical understanding of mathematical modelling and numerical simulation.


Personal qualities

Personal qualities such as collaborative skills, initiative and suitability for doctoral studies will be weighed together with formal subject knowledge.


Other assessment criteria

In addition to the formal eligibility requirements, the selection will also be based on other work (e.g. thesis work and project work), courses and interviews with the applicants.

Experience of practical management with experimental studies in lab and field environment and sporting background is also advantageous, as well as experience of participation in scientific work.

Since some teaching will be included in the position, good knowledge of Swedish and/or English, both spoken and written, is desirable.

A brief description of the applicant’s vision and objectives related to the project shall be included in the application.

Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures

 

Terms of employment

The doctoral studentship position corresponds to two years of full-time studies and is expected to lead to a Degree of Licentiate. The position can be extended to a Degree of Doctor provided that further funding is obtained. The entry date is October 1, 2023 or as agreed.

Initial doctoral student positions are valid for a maximum of one year, after which the position may be renewed by no longer than two years at a time. Provisions regarding doctoral studentship employment can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
