Doctoral student in criminology - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences operates at Campus Sundsvall and Campus Östersund. Activities include research and education within the subjects of criminology, sociology, political science, gender studies, history, comparative literature, English, Swedish, and religious studies. The research is conducted within each respective subject and within different research centers and forums.

The position is located at Mid Sweden University, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, within the subject of criminology, Campus Sundsvall. This position requires applicants to be admitted to postgraduate education in criminology with Stockholm University’s Department of Criminology.

Duties and scope of the doctoral studies
According to the Higher Education Ordinance, those appointed to doctoral studentship positions should primarily devote themselves to their own studies at the research level. Employment as a doctoral student is granted for the time deemed necessary for the completion of the doctoral studies under the standard study time, which corresponds to a full-time doctoral program of four years. The doctoral student is expected to perform departmental service (such as teaching) at Mid Sweden University, to a limited extent, corresponding to a maximum of 20% of a full-time post. As a result, the period of employment can be extended to a maximum of five years.

Description of the content of the doctoral studies
The doctoral programme in criminology at Stockholm University aims to provide the student with in- depth knowledge of the subject's theory, methods, current research in the field, and other skills necessary to make the student a critical and independent researcher with the ability to carry out scientific work.

Dissertation projects eligible for the current doctoral student position are chosen freely by the respective applicant, provided that they fall within the stated specialisation, and that the environment can offer appropriate supervision.

Physically, the employee will be stationed at Mid Sweden University. Subject-specific education will take place at Stockholm University, and supervision will take place at both Mid Sweden and Stockholm University. Qualification  requirements
General entry requirements are fulfilled by those who have been awarded a degree at the advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at the advanced level, or otherwise acquired essentially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

According to the general study plan for postgraduate education in criminology, specific requirements are fulfilled by applicants who have completed the requirements of at least 60 higher education credits in criminology at the advanced level, or for postgraduate education in a criminologically relevant subject, of which at least 15 of the higher education credits must be composed of academic papers or

corresponding independent work, or otherwise acquired essentially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country. The applicant must also have sufficient knowledge of Swedish and/or English to be able to complete the education in criminology at the postgraduate level.

As a doctoral student, only those who are expected to be or already have been admitted to postgraduate education at a university may be employed. With employment as a doctoral student/admission to postgraduate education, emphasis will be placed primarily on the degree of ability to complete postgraduate education.

To be admitted to the doctoral programme, the applicant is therefore required to have basic qualifications and special qualifications, and be deemed able to complete the program.

Assessment criteria
Selection among the applicants is made with regard to the ability to complete education at the research level. When allocating a place in the doctoral programme, the emphasis is placed primarily on the degree of independence in analysis and structure of previous work, methodological and scientific maturity, ability to formulate problems, and stringency in previous work and in research design. Emphasis is also placed on the department’s ability to offer adequate supervision, given the planned research.

Processing
The preparation of the position follows the forms specified in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Admission
The position includes full-time research studies (100%) for four years, or part-time research sstudies (80%) as well as departmental duties and/or teaching (20%) for five years. Entry March 2021 or according to agreement.
