Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering

At the department, education is conducted in the subjects of computer engineering, electronics, electrical engineering and sound production. The research at the department takes place at the research center Sensible Things that Communicate (www.miun.se/stc) and deals with sensor-based systems and services for use within the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.

The research center STC (Sensible Things that Communicate, www.miun.se/stc) is looking for a PhD student in AI based imaging measurement systems. The research will be carried out together with industrial partners in a larger project that integrates technology challenges in sensor technology for industrial and medical applications.

Position description

Independent third-cycle studies encompassing research. We offer a PhD student position in AI based imaging measurement systems focused on studying how AI methods can be integrated with measurement systems so that enough information can be generated to enable automation of performance obstacles in a both remote and direct control of timber loaders. The position is related to collaborating research groups with activities in machine learning, sound analysis and image analysis as well as artificial intelligence. The research is carried out in close collaboration with Skogforsk (https://www.skogforsk.se/english/).

The work will include evaluation of sensor systems (camera, LIDAR and other), machine learning methods and uncertainty analysis of the integrated solution. Additionally, the PhD student will configure the methods to a more general problem. Work can be experimental and theoretical in nature and include data collection, development and verification of models, and generalization of solutions.

The doctoral position leads to double degrees, where you receive a degree from both Mid Sweden University and University of Salerno. The first two years are carried out at University of Salerno, and the final two years are in Mid Sweden University (Sundsvall).

Entry requirements

General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements include at least 90 credits in the subject of electrical engineering, computer engineering or subjects closely related to these, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Selection criteria

In addition to the formal eligibility requirements, the selection will also be based on the relevance of prior knowledge for working with imaging, image processing, autonomous vehicles, uncertainty estimation and machine learning, relevance in thesis work, project work, courses and interviews with the applicants. Personal qualities such as cooperativeness, initiative and suitability for doctoral studies will be weighed against the formal subject knowledge. A brief description of the applicant's visions and goals must be included in the application.
