Mid Sweden University, The Department of Computer and System Science

The Department of Computer and System Science is located at Campus Östersund. The department conducts research and education in the following subjects: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, and Statistics.

Job description:
The ongoing digitalization of societies creates an ever-greater dependence on software. Together with national partners, we in the Software Engineering research group work on methods and tools to reveal undesired or unexpected behaviors in both traditional and AI software. The goal is an automated detection and summarization of so-called boundary candidates that depict nearby inputs where the actual behavior of the software under test changes notably. We apply state-of-the-art search/optimization and distance metrics to achieve this.

To support us in developing and extending our existing solutions with a special focus on testing AI software, we are looking for a motivated PostDoc Researcher. As a PostDoc, you predominantly support the researchers in ongoing research projects. The position is subdivided into 80% research and 20% teaching. Programming, experimentation, and co-authoring research papers are the main tasks for the two-year assignment. Some of the work might be done in collaboration with our industrial partners. There are multiple directions of interest. One of them is the investigation of boundaries in explainable/interpretable AI. Another is the focus on summarizing boundary candidates to present them to software testing professionals (potentially using machine learning). A third direction is the investigation of an automated (partial) software specification extraction.

You will contribute with your own insights and knowledge from former experience on relevant topics, including search-based testing, fuzzing, fault localization, information theory, and machine learning. We expect you to be fluent in programming Julia, Python, or R with ample experience from previous projects. Experience with Julia is a bonus. You will get the opportunity to get involved in the research funding process to (learn how to) successfully apply for grants.

We are looking forward to receiving your application.

Requirements:
To qualify for employment as a post-doctor, the applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a Ph.D. The Ph.D. degree must also have been obtained no more than three years before the application date (read more in Mid Sweden University Employment Procedures).

Assessment:
The candidate is expected to actively participate in the software engineering research group with her/his expertise. The candidate is expected to be clear in her/his communication in English, both written and oral. We encourage female applicants for reasons of gender balance.

Personal Qualities:
The candidate shall proactively identify and communicate potential solutions to the challenges and reach out for support when/where needed. Further, finding solutions will require a great proportion of creativity from the candidate, which can be presented through previous creative solutions that she/he contributed to. The candidate shall be dependable when solving smaller and larger assigned tasks independently. She/he shall be solution-oriented and constructive in her communication to solve challenges with other team members of varying levels of experience. The candidate shall also be hands-on, actionable, and capable of moving flexibly between more theoretical work, whiteboard talks, and implementation/experimentation.

Terms of employment:
The postdoc position is full-time for two years.
