Mid Sweden University (MIUN, Sweden) in collaboration with Tampere University (TAU, Finland) is looking for a talented and motivated candidate with a strong background in Image Processing, Computer Vison, Optimization, Machine and Deep Learning, and Applied Mathematics, to deploy innovative Visual AI and develop next generation imaging technology for sensing, processing, and rendering of images.
The doctoral position is part of the international research school IRS TransTech, where you will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading international universities and Swedish companies. The research school focuses on transformative technologies such as AI, IoT, and advanced materials, with the goal of driving sustainable industrial development and strengthening international research and business networks.
The research for this position will be carried out in collaboration between the Realistic 3D research group at the STC research centre, Mid Sweden University (www.miun.se/realistic3d) and the 3D Media research group at Tampere University, Finland (https://research.tuni.fi/3dmedia). The research will investigate and design neural architectures for solving imaging problems, by incorporating domain knowledge of modality-specific image formation. This doctoral position will lead to a double PhD degree from the two universities.
Job description
Independent third-cycle studies encompassing research 100%. Third cycle education (PhD education) consists of both course work and research.
Entry requirements
General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements include at least 90 credits in the subject of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Assessment criteria
The candidate is expected to have demonstrated expertise in Image Processing, Computer/Machine Vision, Machine and Deep Learning, and Optimization algorithms; very good mathematical knowledge and skills; very good skills in programming, using e.g. Python / PyTorch / Tensorflow etc.; and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Previous experience of the following topics is meritorious: immersive media such as augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR), inverse problems and related algorithms, and high-performance computing and parallel processing on GPUs.
Personal qualities
The personal qualities required for the position include being analytical, systematic, communicative, as well as having the ability to work independently and as part of a team. These qualities are important for success in research training. Additional desirable qualities are curiosity, creative thinking, taking initiative, and being goal-oriented.

Other assessment criteria include published scientific articles, larger software projects, and other activities relevant for the position.
Employment process
Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures.
Terms of employment
The doctoral studentship position corresponds to four years of full-time studies and is expected to lead to a Doctoral Degree. The entry date is 1 March 2026 or as agreed.
Initial doctoral student positions are valid for a maximum of one year, after which the position may be renewed by no longer than two years at a time. Provisions regarding doctoral studentship employment can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
Employment benefits include parental allowance supplement, fitness program, healthcare and medicinal products, occupational pension, and insurance.
Vacation: 28 paid days per year, which increases with age.

Salary: In accordance with Mid Sweden University’s salary scale for doctoral students: starting at 33 900 SEK (before taxes), increasing with progression in the studies.
