At the department, education is conducted in the subjects of computer engineering, electronics, electrical engineering and sound production. The research at the department takes place at the research center Sensible Things that Communicate (www.miun.se/stc) and deals with sensor-based systems and services for use within the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.

Job description
We offer a time limited position as Research Engineer in applied machine learning for sound measurement and sound imaging. The position focuses on the areas of deep learning for sound analysis, sound positioning methods, signal processing for sound positioning, and implementation of machine learning for sound classification. The position is connected to collaborating research groups with activities in condition monitoring, sound analysis and image analysis as well as built-in systems. The research for the position is carried out in close collaboration with national and international partners.

The focus of the position is in the field of deep learning for the characterization, imaging and positioning of sounds. The position will also include signal processing and positioning methods for sound. The position may also include deep learning for image data. Work can be experimental and theoretical in nature and include data collection, development and verification of models and methods, and generalization of solutions. 

 

Requirements
To be eligible for employment as a Research Engineer, your qualifications must match the requirements described in Mid Sweden University’s employment procedures.  

To qualify for a position as Research Engineer, you must hold a doctorate or an equivalent foreign degree in a relevant research field. For this position, it is required that you have a PhD in electronics, electrical engineering, computer engineering or a related field and have previous academic experience in machine learning, sound measurement and signal processing.

 

Assessment 
In addition to the formal eligibility requirements, the selection will also be based on the relevance of prior knowledge for work with sound imaging systems, signal processing, sound measurement and machine learning, relevance in the degree, previous work and interviews with the applicants. More specifically:

-       Specialized knowledge in sensor array processing.

-       Published before in Beamforming applications.

-       Experience in AI, Deep Learning and Machine Learning.

 

Personal qualities
Active participation and collaboration within the research group is necessary. It is therefore important that you are a responsible person with a holistic view, that you can communicate freely both orally and in writing in English and that you are structured in your way of working.

Personal qualities such as collaborative skills, initiative and suitability for conducting research will be weighed against the formal subject knowledge. 

 

Other assessment criteria 
Technical skills such as Python and MATLAB, with experience in machine learning and array processing in these tools.

Processing of the appointment will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures.

 

Terms of employment
Special fixed-term employment: The position consists of 100% of full-time employment, during the period 2024-12-19 or as agreed/but not beyond 2025-09-30, or another date agreed with the head of department.
