Department of Natural Science, Design and Sustainable Development

The department is located on both Campus Östersund and Campus Sundsvall, where we educate and conduct research within the department's subjects with a focus on sustainable development.

Tasks

The EcoChemistry Group is seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to contribute to the research projects Fiber2Comp and Char-CC. The projects aim to improve co-composting techniques to remediate heavily polluted sediments and integrate biochar for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. The final goal is to transform organic wastes into valuable resources while contributing to climate change mitigation and pollution fight actions.

The postdoctoral candidate will focus on understanding how operational factors impact the microbiome driving these processes, through the use of analytical chemistry and molecular biology methods. The aim is to explore how this knowledge can aid in increasing the degradation of target pollutants and mitigating emissions.

Eligibility

The person who is to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow must be eligible according to the requirements described in Mittuniversitet's employment regulations

Applicants with a PhD degree in environmental biotechnology, environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and other related disciplines are welcomed. A solid academic background and proficient experience in microbial ecology and the use of state-of-the-art molecular biology tools are required.

Assessment grounds

Expertise in molecular biology methods (rRNA sequencing analyses, metagenomic approaches, quantitative PCR, etc.) used in microbial ecology research.

Ability to use analytical chemistry methods for the analysis of target pollutants in environmental matrices. Ability to design and operate bench-scale bioreactors. Experience in studying the functioning of microbial communities or microbiomes. Ability for independent data analyses and manuscript writing. Track record of subject-related primary contributions to peer-reviewed publications.

Personal Characteristics

We seek enthusiastic colleagues with strong social competencies and communication skills to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and multicultural research group. We expect our new colleagues to be flexible and capable of working effectively on diverse tasks, while being creative and highly proactive.
