Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering

At the department, education is conducted in the subjects of computer engineering, electronics, electrical engineering and sound production. The research at the department takes place at the research center Sensible Things that Communicate (www.miun.se/stc) and deals with sensor-based systems and services for use within the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.

This postdoc position is connected to the Autonomous Sensor Systems group. The group has a research focus on low-power embedded systems, with research activities on energy harvesting, embedded machine learning, and low-power sensor systems.

Job description

This postdoc position focuses on ambient light energy harvesting for low-power embedded systems. Ambient light energy harvesting is an attractive solution as light is commonplace in many IoT applications. Moreover, the cost of small photovoltaic panels is relatively low, which enables the design of self-powered systems at low cost. However, it is challenging to design such systems as the available energy is limited and depends on the ambient light conditions the system is placed in. Research on energy-neutral sensing systems and/or intermittent sensing systems is therefore still required. Particularly, novel methods for the systematic design of such systems will be a research track to be investigated as part of this position.

As a postdoc in the Autonomous Sensor Systems group, you will be a vital part of the research group, collaborating with PhD students, other postdocs and senior researchers. You are expected to participate to the group’s research work and to bring forward own ideas in the development of the research agenda. You are also expected to contribute to the publication and communication of research results. The research group, in turn, will provide a forum for discussion, supervision and assistance during your studies, supporting your research and career development. You will be part of a leading group in the field of low-power sensing systems and be able to exploit the groups large international network.

Requirement

To be eligible for a post-doctoral appointment, your qualifications must match the requirements described in Mid Sweden University’s employment procedures.

To be eligible for this position, you should hold a PhD degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, computer engineering, or a similar subject.

Assessment

The assessment of applications to this position will be based on the applicants’ previous research experience and publication record. The topic of your previous research and its quality will be taken into account. Moreover, the quality and quantity of your publication record, as well as your motivation and vision for your postdoc period, will be considered in the assessment.

We see it as an advantage if your PhD studies and/or subsequent research has been in the field of energy harvesting or low-power embedded systems. You should feel confident in embedded system design both on hardware and software level. Moreover, you should have previous experience in programming in, for example, Python, Matlab, or C++. Experience with machine learning is beneficial.

Personal qualities

In addition to your technical competences, your suitability for the position will be evaluated based on your ability to collaborate with others, to work independently, and to communicate clearly.

Other assessment criteria

The position requires good English language skills.
