The department is located on both Campus Östersund and Campus Sundsvall, where we educate and conduct research within the department's subjects with a focus on sustainable development.

The subject chemistry at Mid Sweden University is defined as the knowledge of chemical subjects' properties, structure and reactions as well as their occurrence and their effects on the environment and their use to solve technical and scientific problems. Job description

Independent third-cycle studies encompassing research (80-100%), teaching and administrative tasks (0-20%).

The doctoral candidate will work in projects conducted by the research groups in Analytical chemistry and Eco-chemistry at Mid Sweden University, and in collaboration with other universities. The research studies will focus on the analysis of chemical markers linked to the chemical defence of conifers. The focus will be on analytical techniques such as LC-MS and GC-MS. Method development within both analysis and sample processing as well as interpretation of obtained data can also be included. Field work may also be included, like sample collection and/or design of green house or outdoor experiments.

The doctoral student will also participate in teaching, for example as a supervisor on laboratory sessions, or other assignments that are outside the doctoral studies.

 

Entry requirements

General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements include at least 90 credits in the subject of chemistry,or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.


Assessment criteria

The applicant should have a good theoretical background in analytical chemistry and in particular in chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. Laboratory experience with an emphasis on chromatographic methods linked to mass spectrometry as well as experience in evaluating data from these types of systems are meritorious. The applicant must have experience of wet chemical work.


Personal qualities

In addition to good subject knowledge, personal qualities such as cooperation skills, initiative and personal suitability for research training, as well as a good ability to plan and structure one's work. As the PhD student will participate in teaching, we would like the applicant to have good communication skills.


Other assessment criteria

Applicants must have a good ability to express themselves verbally and in writing in English. It is seen as particularly meritorious if the applicant can express them self verbally and in written Swedish.

Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures

 

Terms of employment

The doctoral studentship position corresponds to four years of full-time studies and is expected to lead to a Degree of Doctor. The entry date is March 1, 2024 or as agreed.

Initial doctoral student positions are valid for a maximum of one year, after which the position may be renewed by no longer than two years at a time. Provisions regarding doctoral studentship employment can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

Salary: In accordance with Mid Sweden University’s salary scale for doctoral students.
