The Department of Communication, Quality Technology, and Information Systems

The department operates on both Campus Östersund and Campus Sundsvall. At the department, education and research are conducted in the subjects of media and communication science, quality technology and management and Information systems.

The research group in Archives and Information Science at Mid Sweden University is the largest of its kind in Sweden, with a large international network. As a doctoral student in our group, you will carry out third-cycle studies in the subject Information Systems. Your research project should be within one of our thematic research areas:

- The archival profession’s change linked to digitization; users and value; use and utility of archival material.
- To study and understand how the democratic function of archives in digitization creates the basis for developing new archival scientific methods and theories.
- Information management (e-management), and utility of archival material, the collective name for how the public sector can effectively handle and manage its information in the short and long term.

In addition to these areas, research is carried out with a broad perspective on information management in areas such as society's crisis preparedness.

Job description: As a doctoral student you are expected to carry out independent third-cycle studies encompassing research (80-100%) within one of the above listed research areas, as well as teaching and administrative tasks (0-20%). The research starts with a research plan which is based on the research proposal in the application. As a doctoral student you are an important part of the research of the archival group.

Entry requirements: General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Specific entry requirements for admission to third-cycle courses and study programmes are that the applicant must have a minimum of 90 credits in a subject relevant to the research specialisation such as archival and or in some other way in or outside Sweden have acquired essentially the equivalent knowledge.

Assessment criteria: The applicant must be able to demonstrate an ability for scientific work. It can, for example, be in the form of a master's thesis, scientific publications or participation in research projects. Pedagogical experience is particularly meritorious, preferably at university level. During the assessment, special emphasis is placed on the applicant's competence in the subject area of ​​archival and information science, especially in the focus areas above.

The assessment will be based on three criteria: the candidate’s ability to conduct research; the ability to successfully pursue graduate studies as well as the outline and motivation of the research proposal accompanying the application, which must pinpoint a context including research questions that relate to the research areas above.

Personal qualities: We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, taking responsibility for their tasks, and driving the research project forward. You must have documented good collaboration skills and a pedagogical insight which, among other things, means a good understanding of how people absorb knowledge and how you can adapt and convey your message to the recipient. You also possess an ability to analyze and work with complicated and complex issues.

Other assessment criteria: The position requires good ability to communicate both in English and Swedish in speech as well as writing, as well as basic IT skills (e.g. Power Point, Word, PDF).

Employment process
Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures

Terms of employment: The doctoral studentship position corresponds to two years of full-time studies and is expected to lead to a Degree of Licentiate. The position can be extended to a Degree of Doctor provided that further funding is obtained. Access by agreement.

Initial doctoral student positions are valid for a maximum of one year, after which the position may be renewed by no longer than two years at a time. Provisions regarding doctoral studentship employment can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
