At the department, education is conducted in the subjects of computer engineering, electronics, electrical engineering and sound production. The research at the department takes place at the research center Sensible Things that Communicate (www.miun.se/stc) and deals with sensor-based systems and services for use within the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.
Job description
Independent third-cycle studies encompassing research (100%).The doctoral position focuses on research and development regarding innovative antenna solutions for sensor nodes within the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT nodes are often designed or must be placed in such a way that standard commercial antennas do not always provide full functionality or simply cannot be used at all, including when aesthetically pleasing products without a visible antenna are requested. In the future, IoT nodes will also build on technologies with 6G, where we are already investigating how communication can be optimized via smart surfaces that actively control propagating radio waves. The doctoral work is one of several parts of the research centre's general investment in IoT, where you will have a central role in the design and integration of antennas. The work is largely carried out with computer-based simulations, but also includes a lot of practical workshop work when antenna solutions are to be realized and measured. During the research studies, you continuously further your education in the field by taking relevant courses as well as following and later being involved in driving the scientific frontline within your niche.
Entry requirements
General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements include at least 90 credits in the subject of electrical engineering or electronics engineering, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Assessment criteria
The assessment of applications to this PhD position will be based on the applicants’ previous experience (e.g., thesis works, projects, internships, and work experience), the relevance of undergone educational programmes and courses, results of previous studies, and the applicants’ vision for the intended PhD studies. We consider it important that the applicant enjoys both pure theoretical work and computer-based simulations as well as practical workshop work to build and test the antenna concepts we develop. Previous work experience in microwave technology or antenna design as well as practical work is advantageous but not a requirement.
Personal qualities
In addition to your technical competences, your suitability for PhD studies will be evaluated based on your ability to collaborate with others, to work independently, and to communicate clearly.
