At the department, education is conducted in the subjects of computer engineering, electronics, electrical engineering and sound production. The research at the department takes place at the research center Sensible Things that Communicate (www.miun.se/stc) and deals with sensor-based systems and services for use within the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.
The research center STC (Sensible Things that Communicate), is seeking two highly motivated PhD students to join the fast-growing Communication Systems and Networks research group and pursue research on beyond 5G OPEN RAN Networks. The research project will focus on the development and implementation of dynamic artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) solutions for the optimization of Beyond 5G Open RAN Networks. The research is motivated by the expanded paradigm of network intelligence needed to manage the complex, diverse, high-performance networks of 5G and beyond and Open RAN. This work enables exploring novel ML methodologies, defining practical use cases, building effective models, and integrating the findings to enhance network performance.
The research will be conducted in the research projects DRIVE and ENSURE6G within the STC research center. You will also actively collaborate with other researchers within the research group, as well as other external partners in both academia and industry. If you are passionate about cutting-edge research in future wireless communication and possess strong skills in machine learning, optimization, and communication systems, we encourage you to apply. Join us in shaping the future of wireless communication.
Job description
Graduate studies including 100 % research. With its data-driven analytical capabilities, AI/ML is instrumental in managing and optimizing complex telecommunication networks, especially in accelerating the seamless 5G and beyond rollout. By processing massive amounts of data, AI/ML can identify patterns and automate decisions, which is vital for real-time optimization in the rapidly evolving and mobile network technology landscape. As 5G and beyond promise higher speeds, lower latency, higher reliability, and increased device connectivity, delivering on these promises require sophisticated methods for managing network resources and infrastructures. In this case, AI/ML offers predictive and analytical capabilities that ensure the efficiency and reliability of next-generation networks.
Within the 5G and beyond technology, the radio access network (RAN) is envisioned to be transformed through Open RAN architecture, allowing innovation, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness to the telecom service providers. However, such a technological shift in RAN adds complexity and diversity due to the native AI/ML deployment for advanced management and network optimization.
These PhD positions aim to improve the integration and interaction between three components – AI/ML, 5G/6G, and Open RAN – crucial for the future of telecommunications. The research results will contribute to pushing the boundaries of future wireless communications as well as input to future standardization of 5G/6G.
Entry requirements
To be considered for a PhD position, the applicant must meet the entry requirements for admission to Mid Sweden University´s third-cycle programme. In order to meet the entry requirements, the applicant must have a second-cycle degree, or have completed at least 240 ETCS credits of which at least 60 credits should be second-cycle courses. An additional requirement is that 90 credits of the 240 total must consist of courses in computer engineering, computer science, or other closely related subjects. The applicant is also eligible for consideration if s/he has acquired the corresponding knowledge in some other way.
Assessment criteria
In addition to the formal eligibility requirements, the selection will also be based on other work (e.g., thesis), advanced level courses and interviews with the applicants. A strong background and previous experience in communication networks is most important for the position. Experience and a scientific publication record in software defined radio (SDR), AI/ML, 5G radio access network (RAN) management is considered meritorious. Good programming skills in Python and C ++, as well as mathematical skills in statistics, stochastic processes, and optimization theory are requirements. Fluent written and oral communication in English is mandatory.
Personal qualities
Qualities such as the ability to collaborate, take initiatives, and suitability for doctoral studies will be weighed together with the formal subject knowledge.
Employment process
Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures.
