Department of Engineering, Mathematics and Science Education

We conduct research and education in physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, industrial design engineering and didactics in mathematics and science education. We offer unique and world-leading research within the FSCN Research Centre and Sports Tech Research Centre.

Job description: Own doctoral education including research (80–100%) and teaching and other departmental duties (0–20%).

The applicant is encouraged to describe his/her research interests, i.e., what you want to investigate and find out in your research as a doctoral student. Research interests should be within or in connection with one of the following specializations or a combination of these:

* Students' development of conceptual understanding, with a particular focus on work with mathematical tasks and mathematical problems.

* Teaching and learning of the mathematical symbolic language.

For applicants with research interests that do not lie directly within these specializations, the description needs to explain or suggest how the interest can be linked to the existing specialization(s).

Eligibility and assessment criteria: General eligibility for admission requires a degree at advanced level or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at advanced level, or in some other way in Sweden or abroad acquired largely equivalent knowledge.

As a doctoral student in mathematics education, you are admitted to the general syllabus in Mathematics and Science Education, with a focus on mathematics or the teaching profession. In addition to general eligibility requirements, a specific requirement differs for the two specializations.

Specific requirement in specialization mathematics is courses of at least 90 credits in mathematics or mathematics education and courses of at least 30 credits in educational sciences (incl. any courses in mathematics education), which must include a thesis of at least 15 credits.

Specific requirement in specialization teaching profession is either teacher education including courses of at least 30 credits in mathematics and a degree project with a focus on mathematics of at least 15 credits, or teacher education including a degree project with a specialization in mathematics of at least 15 credits and at least 2 years of pedagogical professional activity including teaching with a focus on mathematics.

Furthermore, the applicant must be able to communicate well in English, both orally and in writing, as well as such ability in general as is needed to benefit from the education.

Employment process
Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures. 

Terms of employment:
The employment as doctoral student is a position corresponding to four years of full-time studies and is expected to lead to a doctoral degree.

A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. Regulations of employment as a doctoral student are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1–7.

Postgraduate education is a campus-based education and cannot be organized as distance education. The doctoral student is also expected to participate actively in the department’s research environment.
