Gaskeuniversiteete/Mid-Sweden University is located in the middle of the Southern Sami area in Sápmi. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences operates at Campus Sundsvall and Campus Östersund. Activities include research and education within the subjects of Civics, Comparative Literature, Criminology, English, Gender Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, Southern Sami, Swedish as a Second Language, and Swedish Language. The research is conducted within each respective subject and within the Risk and Crisis Research Center (RCR), Forum for Gender Studies (FGV), and DEMICOM (an interdisciplinary centre for research on journalism, crisis communication, media development, and organizational and political communication).

The discipline of sociology at Mid Sweden University is a vibrant research and educational environment. It constitutes an administrative unit, together with the discipline of criminology, under the auspices of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences with operations in both campuses of Mid Sweden University. Sociology confers degrees at the bachelor, master, and PhD levels. The discipline's three research areas are risk and crisis research, power and society critical issues, and working life and organisation. The majority of the faculty members are affiliated with the Risk and Crisis Research Centre (RCR) (www.miun.se/rcr), the Forum for Gender Studies (FGV) (www.miun.se/fgv), or the Network for Working Life Research (NAFS).

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is currently offering a doctoral (PhD) position in sociology, stationed in campus Östersund, ref.nr MIUN 2023/1517. The position is focused on the sociological study of topics related to risks and crises aligned with the research of the discipline and RCR.

Job description
Independent third-cycle studies including research (80%), teaching and administrative tasks (20%).

Entry requirements
In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at the second-cycle level or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The specific entry requirements are at least 90 credits in the discipline of sociology or a closely related discipline, in Sweden or abroad, including a thesis of at least 15 credits.

Assessment criteria
The assessment of applicants fulfilling the formal entry requirements will be based on a documented aptitude for research, demonstrated in the applicants’ Bachelor's and Master's theses and other publications. Applicants must demonstrate an ability to work independently. Any documented experience in research and education in the fields of risk, crisis and/or safety in the social sciences is considered particularly meritorious. 

The application must be accompanied by a PhD project outline of a maximum of 3,000 words, including a research problem and a proposed plan to conduct the research. The outline must have a risk, crisis and/or safety perspective. Though granularity is not required, the PhD project outline must indicate the broad research area and include a few attendant research questions. The project outline is considered a work sample rather than an actual plan for dissertation work.

Personal qualities
Working in a doctoral position requires being self-motivated and having good linguistic analysis, collaboration, and communication abilities.

Other assessment criteria
The applicant should be able to understand, write and speak Swedish at B1 level (European scale), which means sufficient listening and reading comprehension to participate in and contribute to meetings and other activities. If the successful candidate is not proficient in Swedish at the time of employment, they are expected to acquire the required language skills during the first two years of employment.

The applicant must have the ability to teach in English.

Employment process
Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University's Employment Procedures. 

Terms of employment
Terms of employment The doctoral studentship position corresponds to four years of full-time studies and is expected to lead to a Degree of Doctor.  The position’s start date is 01 October 2023 or as negotiated with the successful candidate.

Initial doctoral student positions are valid for a maximum of one year, after which the position may be renewed by no longer than two years at a time.

Salary: In accordance with Mid Sweden University's salary scale for doctoral students.
