Mid Sweden University, The Department of Information Systems and Technology

The Department of Information Systems and Techonology is situated at Campus Sundsvall. Its activities include research in the field of Computer and System science, mainly in the fields of the subjects Computer engineering and Industrial organization and economy.

The research center STC (Sensible Things that Communicate www.miun.se/stc) is looking for a postdoc in the field of trustworthy edge computing, with focus on secure Internet infrastructure for future solutions based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The research is motivated by a need to secure the future of internet infrastructure in order to enable the development of products and services based on AI. Today's fiber network in combination with the Internet of Things creates both opportunities and challenges for various stakeholders. This work enables secure data collection and computations which is a prerequisite for implementations of efficient AI and machine learning (ML).

The research will be conducted in the research group Communication Systems and Networking (CSN), which specializes in teaching, research, and innovation within the domain of wireless and wired communication and network technologies. The group features a dynamic and international environment, which aims at producing high-level academic research while maintaining a tight interplay with relevant industrial partner. The candidate will actively collaborate with other researchers within the research group, STC research center, as well as with our external collaborators in academia and industry.

Job description:
The candidate´s research will focus on combinations of cloud, fog, edge, mist, and 5G Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC), with the involvement of various security solutions such as blockchain technology and powerful computing clusters for AI/ML. This type of efficient infrastructure also requires optimization of computing power at various levels, for example by using nearby devices that are not currently in use. For optimal use of the infrastructure, information can also be sent further up/down the hierarchy for better response times and latency or balancing between different costs both in the form of money for cloud calculations or other aspects such as energy and/or data traffic. Within this research project, you will work on novel methods to design resilient, low-latency, secure, and privacy-preserving edge computing schemes by using tools from AI/ML. This will also include experimental research work, testbed development, and real-world deployment.

The candidate is expected to actively contribute to the different research projects, coordinating technical contribution and/or preparing project deliverables, as well as preparing new research proposals to attract industrial, national, and European projects. Finally, the candidate is expected to assist in the supervision of PhD students and some teaching may also be included, but not more than 20% of full time.

Requirements and assessment:
You must have a strong background and previous experience in network security and fog/mist computing, as well as PhD degree in computer science, computer engineering, or similar relevant subject. Good programming skills in Python, Java, and C ++, as well as mathematical skills in statistics, optimization, and data mining are also required. Experience of MEC, blockchain, distributed systems, AI/ML, and IoT is meriting. The ideal candidate should have an attitude towards practical implementations. In that respect, hands-on experience with IoT devices (Raspberry Pi, Arduino, etc.), IoT protocols (MQTT, CoAP, OPC-UA), and networking systems (routers, OpenFlow, etc.) is highly appreciated. International experience is desirable, as well as an outstanding publication track record in international conferences and journals on communication and networking. Experience of working with industrial projects or publicly funded research projects is desirable. The candidate is also expected to be highly committed, an excellent team-worker, and have good skills in critical thinking. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are also required.

To qualify for an employment as a post-doctor, the applicants must hold a PhD degree, or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a PhD. The PhD degree must also have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application date.

Terms of employment: The postdoc position is full time for two years.
