Mid Sweden University, The Department of Information Systems and Techonology

The Department of Information Systems and Techonology is situated at Campus Sundsvall. Its activities include research in the field of Computer and System science, mainly in the fields of the subjects Computer engineering and Industrial organization and economy.

The advertised position will be linked to the research group Realistic 3D, which is headed by Professor Mårten Sjöström (see http://www.miun.se/stc/realistic3d), at the research centre STC. The group is part of the national research infrastructure InfraVis (https://infravis.se), which with this advertisement recruits a research engineer in computer technology to InfraVis.

Working tasks :
InfraVis is a national research infrastructure funded by the Swedish Research Council in support of scientific advancement through the application of state-of-the-art data analysis and visualization techniques. The goals are to significantly improve data analysis support, address new challenges involving large and complex data and create competitive advantages for Swedish researchers. The infrastructure consists of visualization experts working with various software solutions and access to high-end visualization laboratories. Users of InfraVis will be offered assistance through a national helpdesk with rapid response times as well as in-depth projects addressing specific data and software challenges. InfraVis will also provide software solutions based on development in connected research groups, curation of international software and best practise, and user training in the form of courses, seminars and on-line documentation.

In this position, you will customize and develop software to assist researchers across Sweden in visualizing scientific data. There are great opportunities to develop your own skills in software development, software curation, visualization, etc. The visualization work involves understanding data, identifying the task, and creating visualization of data with tools for either scientific visualization (e.g. with ParaView, VTK, Matlab, OpenGL , etc.) or information visualization (e.g. D3, Vega, Tableau, ggplot, MS Power BI, etc). This visualization work is carried out within InfraVis by application experts together with you as a research engineer at three levels of user support for researchers. The lowest level means fast response times for general responses, as well as references to software resources and documentation. The intermediate level involves support for users with adaptations of software and data. The highest level requires application experts and research engineers to customize software and develop new and application-specific methods for visual data analysis and communication. InfraVis research engineers may also participate in outreach and communication activities, user training, software curation and documentation, development of the infrastructure itself, as well as internal training and self-evaluation. As a research engineer, you are encouraged to further develop your professional and technical skills, both to stay current in software development, but also to gain knowledge and skills in the scientific subjects where visualization is applied.

The service may to a lesser extent (20%) imply support other research projects with technical solutions.

Eligibility and assessment basis:
We are looking for you that:

  • have a master's degree, or possibly a licentiate or doctorate, in computer technology, software development, information visualization, visual analysis or equivalent from a related field.
  • have very good programming skills in one or more of the languages/APIs/frameworks in the following areas:
    • o Software Development: C++, C#, Python, Java
    • o Graphics: Vulkan/DirectX/OpenGL/WebGL, Unreal/Unity3D
    • o Web Development: JavaScript, HTML5/CSS
    • o Visualization: Vega, Tableau, D3, Paraview, Microsoft Power BI
  • are proficient in professional English, both spoken and written.

It is preferable that you have:

  • good knowledge of modelling and development of visualization tools as well as documented experience of working with large amounts of data (e.g. multidimensional, temporal, textual or network data) from different research areas.
  • good knowledge of Swedish.
  • work experience from one of the Swedish or international visualization environments. We also consider experience from other research areas as meritorious in our assessment.
  • experience of working with commercial visual analysis tools (Tableau, Power BI, etc.), as well as a solid education in data mining or machine learning.
  • knowledge related to research within the research group Realistic 3D (light field, multi-view geometry, computer vision, image processing, etc.)

We emphasise personal suitability and ability for independent and structured work, good initiative and ability to make priorities, accuracy and service-oriented, ability to run and complete tasks within given time frames, flexibility and very good collaboration skills.
