Mid Sweden University, The Department of Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering is located at Campus Sundsvall. The department conducts research and education in Energy Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

The FSCN research center forms a strong research environment in materials and process technology. We work multidisciplinary and develop knowledge and technology that primarily enables resource-efficient processes, new or improved functionality of bio-based materials, and energy materials. Through close collaboration with companies, we stay updated on market needs and support the development of knowledge in the industry.

We are now looking for a doctoral student who wants to work with characterization of fibers and fiber fragments at the particle level and the development of methodology for this. The project is part of the research program NeoPulp which has recently been started within FSCN, where an important goal is to develop new analysis methodologies for fibers, fiber materials and their manufacturing processes. Please read more about our research group in fiber mechanics and about the NeoPulp program on our website www.miun.se/en/fscn.

Main tasks and responsibilities
The work includes the use and development of different fiber characterization methods with the main focus on optical fiber analysis in order to investigate how parts of the manufacturing process and its conditions affect the individual fibers. In order to be able to study how the fibers in pulp and fiber material interact during loading and how fiber deformations occur, X-ray tomography, image analysis and simulations will also be used. The main tasks are to devote to their research studies, which includes participation in research projects and postgraduate courses. The tasks may also include teaching and other departmental tasks (maximum 20%).

Requirements and assessment
The basic eligibility required is a completed degree at advanced level, or completed courses of at least 240 higher education credits (of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level) or essentially equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way within or outside the country. The special eligibility required is at least 90 higher education credits in a subject relevant to the research specialization or essentially equivalent qualifications acquired in some other way within or outside the country.

We are looking for candidates who are interested in combining numerical analysis, simulations and physical experiments. Experience of laboratory work, computer simulation methods, digital analysis methods and microscopy is an advantage. Personal qualities such as the ability to collaborate, initiative and suitability for doctoral studies will be weighed together with the formal subject knowledge. You should also have a good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in English.

The preparation of the employment follows the forms specified in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance and continues in accordance with Mid Sweden University's employment regulations.
