The Department of Economics, Geography, Law and Tourism (EJT, at Mid Sweden University) is pleased to announce the availability of a faculty-funded PhD position in Tourism Studies. It is anticipated that the successful applicant can take up the position from 1st of May 2022.

Tourism studies and Etour (the tourism research center at Mid Sweden University) is a leading academic tourism environment in Northern Europe. It is home to the first Scandinavian PhD program in tourism studies established in 2009. The Department offers a rich, multidisciplinary and international research environment.

Our PhD program has three pillars of 1) tourism resources, 2) consumer behavior in tourism, and 3) tourism management, where several scientific perspectives and disciplinary backgrounds come together to study tourism. Examples of current research topics; nature-based tourism & outdoor recreation, transformative e-Tourism, events, management of destination brands, tourist behavior, entrepreneurship, destination sustainability, environment and climate, culture and popular culture, socio-economic effects of tourism, and tourism  in traumatized regions.

Tourism and hospitality are currently under unprecedented pressure from the pandemic but the signs of recovery are already visible in many tourist destinations. In  addition, new patterns and modes of travelling are emerging with the development of  ICT. This creates a great need for new knowledge and critical analysis of the ongoing rapid transformations of the tourism and hospitality sector as well as in support of its efforts towards sustainability using the transformative powers of tourism.

In this announcement we invite applicants with their own research proposals. We particularly encourage those oriented towards tourism destinations, businesses, entrepreneurship, tourist behavior, tourist experiences, governance and management.  Links to global sustainability frameworks, such as the UN SDGs, Planetary boundaries, or international agreements and conventions, are also encouraged.
