Mid Sweden University, The Department of Natural Sciences

The Department of Natural Sciences (NAT) is based at Campus Sundsvall, where we educate and conduct research in the subjects of biology, physics, chemistry, engineering, technical design and engineering physics.

Main activities and responsibilities:
Mid Sweden University is starting a large research program on the behaviour of wood-based fibres in industrial manufacturing processes. With this, we want to support the development of new material properties and further reduction of the footprint of forest-based industries, and thereby the growth of Swedish bioeconomy. We will establish a new approach to process research by focusing on the dynamic mechanical phenomena that the inhomogeneous and interacting fibres of forest industry experience during different processing steps. The program will be run by our research centre FSCN (www.fscn.se/en) together with experts on information and sensor technology from the research centre STC (www.stc.se/en) in collaboration with industrial partners.

In order to strengthen the new research program, we open a new position for a professor to develop characterisation methodology for the behaviour of systems of bio-based particles under dynamic loading. Of particular importance would be to study – directly or indirectly - how the deformations of wood fibres depend on their geometric configuration and viscoplasticity with or without the presence of a fluid medium. We envision that a range of methods could be used to extract direct and indirect information and welcome the applicants to outline how they would like approach the problem.

Teaching is an important part of all academic positions at Mid Sweden University, and we expect that the new professor contributes to our MSc programs in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Physics.

Assessment criteria and eligibility requirements
To be eligible for the position of professor you must have proven scientific and teaching proficiency (Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance) in the subject and have the other abilities needed to carry out the duties of the position well. In addition, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria described in Mid Sweden University’s Employment procedures and the Qualifications criteria for employment as a professor at the Faculty of Science, Technology and Media are applicable. Special emphasis in the evaluation will be put on the applicant’s pedagogical and scientific merits and how well of the presented research plan fits to the research environment. Demonstrated ability to plan, apply funding and drive research projects in collaboration with academic partners and industry is also a merit.
