Mid Sweden University, Department of Information Systems and Technology

The Department of Information Systems and Techonology is situated at Campus Sundsvall. Its activities include research in the field of Computer and System science, mainly in the fields of the subjects Computer engineering and Industrial organization and economy.

Mid Sweden University offers three PhD positions, which will be registered in Double degree doctoral programmes at academic institutions in Finland, France, Germany and Sweden.

This position refers to research in ESR 12: Representation and compression of multi-sensor video for combined human and computer vision applications with double degree with INRIA/University of Rennes I, France.

Job description
The research will be supported by an extensive training program consisting of training schools, workshops, and webinars. Mobility between network partners is supported by research visits and secondments. In this way, the employed researchers will be integrated in the network with the aim to help them to interact with their fellows and within different research, development and innovation environments.

Objectives: Inserting deep learning tools into the framework of the engineered approach of versatile video coding (VVC) in order to provide enhanced RD-performance from signal dependent compression, without increasing total computational complexity. Develop a compression framework based on variational autoencoder and generative adversarial networks (GAN) architectures that is decoupled from the traditional hybrid coding paradigm and fully adopt signal dependent compression. Incorporate scene flow as a mean to enhance prediction accuracy for any temporal redundancy reduction system within the above two approaches.

Planned secondment(s): (1) INRIA, nine months during year two, study of inter-play between scene flow estimation and deep learning techniques for angular and temporal prediction in light field compression. (2) Ericsson, 2 months during year four, adjustments and testing applied to actual data from vehicular case.

Requirements and assessment
To be considered for a PhD position, the applicant must meet the entry requirements for admission to Mid Sweden University´s third-cycle programme. In order to meet the entry requirements, the applicant must have master degree in the fields of computer engineering/science, electrical engineering, communications engineering, physics, information technology, or a closely related field.

We are looking for a candidate to work on highly innovative projects in a competitive yet collaborative research and study environment. In addition to the formal qualifications, selection is also based on other works (e.g. thesis), and advanced level courses, as well as through interviews and assignments. Besides good subject knowledge, emphasis will be on creative thinking, motivation, ability to cooperate, initiative to work independently and personal suitability for research training. Previous experience of augmented and virtual reality, telepresence systems, image and video processing and coding, as well as multiple view geometry, computer vision, computer graphics, machine learning, and applied mathematics is meritorious. Proficiency in using scientific software packages such as Python, Matlab and C are required.

Applicants shall, at the time of recruitment by the host organization, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree that would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate.

The positions include transnational mobility, i.e. moving from one country to another. According to the H2020 MSCA Mobility Rule, at the time of recruitment by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.

Terms of employment: The PhD position refers to employment corresponding four years of fulltime studies and is planned to lead up to a PhD.
