Mittuniversitetet, Institutionen för hälsovetenskap

The Department of Health Sciences is situated at Campus Sundsvall and Campus Östersund. It offers courses, programmes and research in the fields of Public Health Science, Sports Science and Rehabilitation Science.

Mid Sweden University is a place where people meet, find inspiration and think innovatively.

The Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre (SWSRC) was established in 2007 within Mid Sweden University at Campus Östersund. The SWSRC carries out research primarily on winter sports at both national and international levels and has a strong focus on interdisciplinary research related to athletes’ physiological responses, biomechanics, performance and health. The SWSRC conducts research in close collaboration with governing bodies and federations in Swedish Olympic sport as well as individuals and groups participating in both elite and recreational sports. Mid Sweden University is recognised as an National Sports University (RIU) through the Swedish Sports Confederation. As part of the Department of Health Sciences at Mid Sweden University, the SWSRC has strong, extensive and well-established interactions with the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Sports Science.

Job description
The focus of the postdoctoral position will be in applied sports biomechanics within alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and biathlon. Although the SWSRC primary focus is on skiing sports, the centre also performs research on winter sports such as ice hockey as well as other sports such as cycling, tennis and running. Biomechanical methods are important tool for performance analysis to better understand and integrate biofeedback models in to daily training. The aim of the postdoctoral position is to integrate both kinetic and kinematic data for performance optimisation across a range of sports. The work will include both laboratory and field measurements depending on the research question(s).

Specific duties will involve collection of new data and facilitating the processing and analysis of already collected motion analysis and kinetic data from previous research studies in skiing. This role will requires the candidate to have a strong background in human movement biomechanics and data processing.

The SWSRC, located in Östersund, has collaborated with Ski Team Sweden Alpine & Skicross (STSA) to develop the Alpine Center of Excellence (ACE), located at the National Arena for alpine skiing in Åre. Therefore, alpine skiing projects will be coordinated with STSA while cross-country and biathlon will be coordinated at the SWSRC in Östersund. Some travel between Åre and Östersund (approximately 80 min by train or car) can be expected.

As postdoctoral researcher, you will have an important role at SWSRC to work with existing and own projects, collaborate with other researchers, and to some degree act as a co-supervisor to student projects at bachelors or masters level in similar projects. Although this postdoctoral position is primarily a research position, there will also be opportunities to deliver teaching within the degree programmes in Sports Science at BSc and MSc level. Senior researchers will help to further your own career and assist to expand your network through their national and international collaborations.

Laboratory facilities include biomechanical equipment such as motion capture systems (Qualisys), force plates (Kistler), video analysis programs (Dartfish), software for programming (MATLAB), EMG (Noraxon), pressure insoles and poles (Pedar, Moticon) and an IMU system (Noraxon).

Essential requirements
A PhD in sports biomechanics Knowledge and experience of using biomechanical equipment and software (motion capture, force plates, EMG, video analysis) Experience of working with biomechanics in high-performance sport Experience of one or more of: MATLAB, Python. The capacity to lead projects and work independently Strong team player who is able to take responsibility and contribute to the team. A proven track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals Fluent in both written and spoken English
