Mittuniversitetet, Institutionen för elektronikkonstruktion

The Department of Electronics Design is situated at Campus Sundsvall. In addition to its research activities, it offers courses and programmes in the subjects Electronics, Electrical engineering and Sound production. The research of the department is conducted at the research centre STC (Sensible Things that Communicate, www.miun.se/stc).

Postdoctoral researcher with a focus on Machine learning in energy-constrained embedded systems

The Sensible Things that Communicate (STC) Research Centre (www.miun.se/stc) announces an open position for a postdoctoral researcher in the Autonomous Sensor Systems research group. You will be part of a large, inter-disciplinary research project on the next generation of industrial IoT systems, and conduct research of high quality and relevance for industrial partners.

Job description
Machine learning has in recent years gained in attraction as a tool for data analysis and data-driven modelling. In an industrial setting, for example, it can be used to evaluate the condition of a machine, or predict the failure of a machine part based on sensor data. Currently, however, the data analysis is in most cases performed offline, that means at a location different from that where the sensor data is acquired. Due to bandwidth limitations, security concerns, and real-time requirements, amongst others, it is desirable to bring the data analysis closer to the data source. This typically means that the machine learning algorithms have to operate on embedded systems with constrained resources.

This position focuses on machine learning for energy-constrained embedded systems, such as wireless sensors operated on batteries or energy harvesting sources. During your employment, you will contribute to a better understanding in this domain, investigating current machine learning methods on low-power microcontrollers, analysing their energy requirements and limitations, as well contributing to the development of novel and enhanced approaches. With this, you will contribute to an exciting young field of research, and acquire an attractive competence relevant for both academia and industry.

As a postdoctoral researcher in the Autonomous Sensor Systems group, we offer you to be a vital part of international active research group with high reputation. Your focus will lie on conducting own research, but you will also collaborate with other group members and assist PhD students. It is expected that you will author and co-author scientific publications based on the research conducted and results obtained. Although the position has a research focus, opportunities in education may exist based on your background and interest. Senior researchers in the group will support you in your research and career planning through active supervision.

Requirements and assessment
In order to be a relevant candidate for this position, you have a PhD degree in electrical/electronic engineering or computer engineering, or a closely related subject. You have prior experience with applying machine learning algorithms, and embedded systems. Previous experiences with running machine learning on embedded systems is beneficial.

You have published research results during or after your PhD in relevant international journals, and have presented your results in international fora, such as academic conferences and workshops.

We are looking for a candidate who is motivated and independent, but functions well in a group. Good command of English orally and in writing is a requirement. These qualifications will be weighted in together with study results and previous research achievements.

Terms of employment: The postdoctoral position is for a period of two years, full-time.

Entry: Intended start of employment is March 2020, or based on agreement.
