The Department of Information Systems and Techonology is situated at Campus Sundsvall. Its activities include research in the field of Computer and System science, mainly in the fields of the subjects Computer engineering and Industrial organization and economy.

The research center STC (Sensible Things that Communicate www.miun.se/stc) announces one open postdoctoral position in the area of AI-based resource management of deterministic QoS for 5G and beyond networks. The research is motivated by 5G (and beyond) telecommunications. Those future, mobile networks are being developed to offer innovative services in domains such as Automotive/Mobility, e-Health and Smart Industry (machine-to-machine communications). The plethora of services are characterized by widely varying traffic characteristics and often highly challenging Quality of Service (QoS) requirements in terms of throughput, latency, packet loss and/or reliability. Moreover, a high degree of user/device mobility and arduous propagation conditions further challenge QoS offering per service or traffic flow.

The research will be conducted in the research group Communication Systems and Networking (CSN). The CSN group is an internationally leading group in the area of wireless communication for industrial applications. The candidate will actively collaborate with other researchers within the research group, STC research center, but also with our external collaborators in academia and industry.

Job description: The successful candidate will join a Scandinavian leading and motivated research team lead by Prof. Mikael Gidlund in order to carry out cutting edge research. The goal of the project is to design an architecture and self-learning algorithms that can optimize and guarantee deterministic QoS of individual traffic flows whilst maximizing network resource efficiency. The general QoS architecture for end-to-end communication of heterogeneous types of traffic will include routing and scheduling for each traffic type and admission control possibly with QoS renegotiations and with shaping and spacing. Ideally, the performance of the proposed QoS architecture will be evaluated by using stochastic modelling and queuing theory, in addition to simulations that will complement the mathematical analysis. Employing AI/ML methodologies are strongly encouraged. The duties include theoretical analysis, algorithm design and implementation via software based simulations, writing scientific papers and support to project management and applications.

Requirements and assessment: For this position, it is required to have a PhD in Signal Processing, Wireless Communications, Communication Systems, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science or a closely related subject. The successful applicants should have an outstanding research documented by top-notch journal and conference publications. We are looking for strongly motivated candidates, who are able to work independently and cooperate with PhD students. Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills are a requirement. Good command of English orally and in writing is required to present and publish research results.

To qualify for an employment as a post-doctor, the applicants must hold a PhD degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a PhD and the PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application date.

Terms of employment: The postdoc position is for a period of 2 years. The position will take place at Communication Systems and Networks research group of Mid Sweden University in campus Sundsvall, Sweden. Expected starting date is 2020-02-01 or according to agreement.

Location: Sundsvall

Entry: According to agreement but preferably in Jan/Feb. 2020.

For further information Further information is available from Prof. Mikael Gidlund (Head of Research), mikael.gidlund@miun.se, or Dr. Patrik Österberg (Head of Institution), patrik.osterberg@miun.se, phone +46 60 148614.
