Mittuniversitetet

The Department of Information Systems and Techonology is situated at Campus Sundsvall. Its activities include research in the field of Computer and System science, mainly in the fields of the subjects Computer engineering and Industrial organization and economy.

The research center STC (Sensible Things that Communicate www.miun.se/stc) announces one open PhD position in the area of optimization and distributed machine learning enabling low latency IoT applications. The research will be conducted in collaboration with industrial partners in a larger project that integrates the technology challenges within the fields of smart systems and services in the application areas of Industrial IoT. The position is within the research group Communication Systems and Networking (CNS).

Job description: To perform fundamental research in telecommunications networks, focusing on developing optimization and machine learning algorithms to guarantee predefined successful packet transmission rate within a stringent pre-specified latency budget required for low latency IoT applications. Learning-based algorithms can enable the system to understand the network dynamism; forecast based on the context information, and proactively manage resources to achieve the network-level and user-level performance targets such as Quality-of-Service (QoS). This project also involves theory building to study the scalability, performance, scheduling, routing, and stability of the learning-based algorithms in large-scale networks with unknowns and imperfections. Experience of theoretical and experimental work within the field is important, as is experience of extensive programming, for instance in R, Python or MATLAB. The duties include reading PhD courses, do theoretical analysis, algorithm design and implementation via software based simulations, and documentation in the form of technical papers and reports.

Requirements and assessment: To be considered for a PhD position, the applicant must meet the entry requirements for admission to Mid Sweden University´s third-cycle programme. In order to meet the entry requirements the applicant must have a second-cycle degree, or have completed at least 240 ETCS credits of which at least 60 credits should be second-cycle courses. The applicant is also eligible for consideration if s/he has acquired the corresponding knowledge in some other way. A Master of Science degree in electrical engineering, signal processing, applied mathematics, computer science, computer engineering, or engineering physics is an appropriate background for employment.

In addition to the formal qualifications, selection is also based on other works (e.g. thesis), and advanced level courses, and through interviews of applicants. Besides good subject knowledge, emphasis will be on creative thinking, co ability, initiative to work independently and personal suitability for research training. A strong background in communication system, optimization, statistics, information theory, machine learning, and programming is preferable. Previous experience in communication systems, and programming in C/C++, Python, or RTOS is meritorious.

Terms of employment: The post graduate position is intended to be an employment equivalent to two years of full-time research studies and aims to lead to a Licentiate degree. The appointment may be extended to a doctor’s degree, provided that additional funding is obtained. Starting date is determined after selection.

Location: Sundsvall

Entry: According to agreement but preferably in Jan/Feb. 2020.
