A PhD student in Wireless Communication - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The research center STC (Sensible Things that Communicate www.miun.se/stc) announces one open PhD position in the area of AI-based resource management of deterministic QoS for 5G and beyond networks. The research is motivated by 5G (and beyond) telecommunications. Those future, mobile networks are being developed to offer innovative services in domains such as Automotive/Mobility and Smart Industry (machine-to-machine communications). The plethora of services are characterized by widely varying traffic characteristics and often highly challenging Quality of Service (QoS) requirements in terms of throughput, latency, packet loss and/or reliability. Moreover, a high degree of user/device mobility and arduous propagation conditions further challenge QoS offering per service or traffic flow.

The research will be conducted in the research project Remote Timber with external partners such as Volvo CE and the mobile operator Telia. The candidate will actively collaborate with other researchers within the research group, STC research center, but also with our external collaborators in academia and industry. 

Job description: The goal of the project is to design an architecture and self-learning algorithms that can optimize and guarantee deterministic QoS of individual traffic flows whilst maximizing network resource efficiency The duties include reading PhD courses, do theoretical analysis, algorithm design and implementation via software based simulations, and documentation in the form of technical papers and reports. 

Requirements and assessment: To be considered for a PhD position, the applicant must meet the entry requirements for admission to Mid Sweden University´s third-cycle programme. In order to meet the entry requirements the applicant must have a second-cycle degree, or have completed at least 240 ETCS credits of which at least 60 credits should be second-cycle courses. The applicant is also eligible for consideration if s/he has acquired the corresponding knowledge in some other way. A Master of Science degree in electrical engineering, signal processing, applied mathematics, computer science, computer engineering, or engineering physics is an appropriate background for employment.

In addition to the formal qualifications, selection is also based on other works (e.g. thesis), and advanced level courses, and through interviews of applicants. Besides good subject knowledge, emphasis will be on creative thinking, co ability, initiative to work independently and personal suitability for research training. A strong background in communication system, optimization, network calculus, information theory, machine learning, and programming is preferable. Previous experience in communication systems, and programming in C/C++, Python, or RTOS is meritorious.

Terms of employment: The post graduate position is intended to be an employment equivalent to two years of full-time research studies and aims to lead to a Licentiate degree. The appointment may be extended to a doctor’s degree, provided that additional funding is obtained. Starting date is determined after selection.
