The Department of Electronics Design is situated at Campus Sundsvall. In addition to its research activities, it offers courses and programmes in the subjects Electronics, Electrical engineering and Sound production. The research of the department is conducted at the research centre STC (Sensible Things that Communicate, www.miun.se/stc).
Applications are invited for a PhD student position at the STC (Sensible Things that Communicate) research centre (www.miun.se/STC).The successful applicant will work on the MiLo Project, Environment in the Control Loop. Research will be done in collaboration with industrial partners as part of a larger project addressing technological challenges in environmental monitoring in relation to airports, waste deposits of cellulose fibres, industry, and winter sports facilities.
Position description: The position focuses on studying localization of sound sources for the classification of the lateral position. The emphasis will be on evaluating and developing methods for sound source localization and effectively implementing them to produce mathematical descriptions and experimental arrangements.
Entry requirements and selection criteria: To meet the basic entry requirements for doctoral programmes, applicants must have a second-cycle degree (Master’s level degree), or have acquired at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 must have been awarded in second-cycle or equivalent courses. Specific eligibility requirements include at least 90 credits in electronics, electrical engineering, computer engineering or closely related subjects. These credits, or an equivalent knowledge base, may have been acquired in Sweden or abroad.
Final selection will also be based on the relevance of an applicant’s other work, such as thesis work or courses, and on interviews with the applicants. Prior experience in signal processing of sound, the use of microphone array setups for the purpose of sound source localization and experience with different positioning methods is required. Personal qualities like teamwork skills, initiative, and suitability for PhD studies will be weighed together with formal subject knowledge. A short description of the applicants’ visions and goals should be included in the application.
Employment: This postgraduate employment opportunity is intended to be equivalent to two years’ fulltime research studies and aims to lead to a Licentiate degree. The appointment may be extended up to the doctoral degree level if additional funding is obtained. The starting date will be determined after selection.
Salary: Given by Mid Sweden University regulated salary for PhD students.
