The Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre (SWSRC) was established in 2007 within Mid Sweden University at Campus Östersund and is now also present in Åre. The SWSRC carries out research primarily on winter sports at both national and international levels and has a strong focus on interdisciplinary monitoring of the physiological responses, biomechanics and performance of athletes. The SWSRC is the Olympic test centre for winter sports in Sweden and conducts research in close collaboration with individuals and groups participating in both elite and recreational sports. As part of the Department of Health Sciences at Mid Sweden University, the SWSRC has strong, extensive and well-established interactions with the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in sports science.

Job description: The SWRC has joined forces with Ski Team Sweden Alpine & Skicross (STSA) to develop the Alpine Center of Excellence (ACE), located at the national arena for alpine skiing in Åre. The ACE is a test and demo environment that integrates different areas of research and expertise, as well as technological advancements, to develop novel ways of working with innovation and performance optimisation. The development of the ACE was supported by funding from a regional EU project, Internet of Sports – Indoor, and is now expanding further into the field of applied biomechanics.

We are therefore looking to recruit a postdoctor with emphasis on biomechanical factors affecting alpine skiing performance both on and off snow. The job will involve carrying out high-quality research in the field of power development, with high practical applicability within the alpine skiing disciplines. Specific projects may involve the investigation of factors contributing to neuromuscular fatigue in order to inform training methods. Factors relating to increased injury risk are also of specific interest. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the broader development of the ACE, as well as to work on the sports science education programs through the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students and teaching within relevant areas.

Essential requirements:

• A PhD in sports biomechanics
• Proficiency in the theoretical and applied practices of strength and power development, as well as kinematic performance analysis
• Experience of using biomechanical equipment and software (e.g., EMG, goniometry, IMU, Kistler force plates, Qualisys/Vicon motion capture, Matlab, LabView, Visual 3D)
• The capacity to lead projects and work independently
• Experience of supervising students and teaching within higher education
• A proven track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
• Fluent in both written and spoken English

Desirable attributes:

• Experience of working with biomechanics in high-performance sport
• Experience of working with alpine skiing
• An interest in outdoor pursuits

Terms of employment: This is a two-year, full-time position

Location: Östersund.

Entry: August 2019 or subject to agreement

Salary: Competitive, negotiated on an individual basis
