Mittuniversitetet

The Department of Electronics Design is situated at Campus Sundsvall. In addition to its research activities, it offers courses and programmes in the subjects Electronics, Electrical engineering and Sound production. The research of the department is conducted at the research centre STC (Sensible Things that Communicate, www.miun.se/stc).

The research center STC (Sensible Things that Communicate www.miun.se/stc) announces an open position for a PhD student in the MiLo project – Environment in the control loop. The research will be made in collaboration with industrial partners in a larger project that integrates the technology challenges within environmental monitoring for the following application areas: Airports, Waist deposits of cellulose fibers, Industries and Winter sport facilities

Position description:
This position focus on multispectral imaging within wavelength region NIR/SWIR (0.9-2.5µm) for characterization of large area surfaces covered with snow, ice or water. Characterization of snow and ice is an important research topic to support studies on environmental and climate changes. Such changes will have a direct impact on e.g. winter sport facilities, which have inspired us to study the use of advanced metrology for improved maintenance of large surfaces. We believe that the same metrology can be used for characterization of airport runways at winter conditions. Multivariate analysis of multispectral image data using artificial intelligence is an indirect measurement method that we believe can give characteristic information about surface conditions. Can we measure and get such information good enough to enable improved maintenance of large area surfaces? This research work will most likely involve experiments on image capture using a multispectral camera outdoor in field where also optics and active illumination might become crucial system components.

Entry requirements:
To meet the basic entry requirements for doctoral programmes applicants must have a second-cycle degree or have completed studies for at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or have equivalent qualifications. Specific eligibility requires at least 90 credits in electrical engineering, computer engineering or subjects closely related to them or in some other way in Sweden or abroad has acquired largely equivalent knowledge.

Selection criteria:
Apart from the formal competence the selection will also be based on other work (i.e thesis work), courses and on interviews of the applicant. Prior experiences in metrology, image analysis, optics or artificial intelligence is seen as an advantage.  Personal qualities like teamwork skills, spirit of initiative, and suitability for Ph.D studies will be weighted together with the formal subject knowledge. A short description of the applicants’ visions and goals should be included in the application.

Employment:
The post graduate employment is intended to be an employment equivalent to two years fulltime research studies and aims to lead to a Licentiate degree. The appointment may be extended up to the doctorate degree, provided that additional funding is obtained. Starting date is determined after selection.
