The Department of Chemical Engineering is located at Campus Sundsvall. The department conducts research and education in Energy Engineering and Chemical Engineering.
The research area concerns computational modelling of multi-phase transport and fragmentation in particle systems. Such phenomena are common in materials processing in a variety of chemical, biomaterials, pharmaceutical and food industries. Our research concerns mechanical transformation of wood chips into fibres under high steam pressure and at high temperature. The process in an industrial refiner happens very quickly (milli-second order) in a confined space (a few millimetres) and results in small particles (millimetres to microns). Here, we want to make use of recent developments in computational multi-physics, such as discrete-element methods and visualization in order to unveil the flow and deformation of wood particles and the resulting fragmentation into fibres. Such rheological information is crucial in the design of processes where new generations of fibres from forest will be produced and for increasing energy efficiency.
PhDs skilled in computational methods and interested in using them to understand flow in granular materials and fragmentation and its applications to technical problems are encouraged to apply for the position. The Knowledge Foundation (KK-Stiftelsen) financially supports the project.
