Department of Communication, Quality Management and Information Systems

The department operates on both Campus Östersund and Campus Sundsvall. At the department, education and research are conducted in the subjects of media and communication science, quality technology and management and Information systems.

Description of the research group

Within the Software Engineering and Education (SEE) research group, we create methods and tools for software development and its education. Software defines a critical part of our society’s digitalization, and developers need to possess central competency for the creation and maintenance of digital systems and services while facing continuous and unpredictable technological progress. Amongst other things, we work on the improvement of testing methods for artificial intelligence and machine learning software, a heightened understanding for how educational interventions shall be implemented to lead to more efficient but even more equality and sustainability in the work environment for developers.

In our research group we combine technical (computer science) and social sciences (informatics/ information systems) backgrounds and direct our attention to the research field of software engineering. Through this announcement, we are seeking two postdocs in either of those fields.

Please find the main fields of interest for SEE here:

  • The investigation of individual and organizational implications and effects of remote-work within software engineering
  • Life-long learning, learning and education within software engineering in a constantly changing technological landscape (such as through large language models)
  • The need and possible strategies for the introduction of automation and augmentation within the software workforce, for instance within software testing. Within software testing, we work on automatically detecting boundary behavior in both traditional and AI software.

Other questions that fall within the SEE scope as mentioned above are also of interest.

Job duties

To support us in developing and extending our research group, we are looking for motivated postdoc researchers. As a postdoc, you predominantly support the ongoing research. The position is divided into 80% research and 20% teaching. Experimentation and co-authoring research papers/grants are the main tasks for the two-year assignment. Some of the work might be done in collaboration with our industrial partners. You will get the opportunity to get involved in the research funding process to (learn how to) successfully apply for grants.

Requirements

The person to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow must be qualified according to the requirements described in Mid Sweden University Employment Procedures.

Assessment

The candidate is expected to actively participate in the software engineering research group with her/his expertise. Experience in teaching, particularly in the form of supervising student essays, is considered advantageous. The candidate is expected to be clear in her/his communication in English, both written and oral.

Personal Qualities

The candidate shall proactively identify and communicate potential solutions to the challenges and reach out for support when/where needed. Further, finding solutions will require a great proportion of creativity from the candidate, which can be presented through previous creative solutions that she/he contributed to. The candidate shall be dependable when solving smaller and larger assigned tasks independently. She/he shall be solution-oriented and constructive in her communication to solve challenges with other team members of varying levels of experience. The candidate shall also be hands on, actionable, and capable of moving flexibly between more theoretical work, whiteboard talks, and implementation/experimentation. Finally, we also want the candidate to be interested in collaboration with other researchers both internally and externally.

Other assessment criteria

The ability to teach in Swedish is an advantage.
